The IAC (Idle Air Control) a rough mode is a needle valve responsible for controlling the idle speed of the engine and is governed by the ECU (Electronic Control Unit or computer).
In vehicles without this valve, the only way to control the idle RPM was by adjusting the idling screw on the throttle valve itself. Usually this is inefficient for the issue of vehicle emissions control since the engine being idle or idle at all times does not have the same load and therefore if we make an incorrect adjustment we would be increasing the fuel consumption of the engine.
Electronically controlling the inlet air, allows the correct adjustment of air necessary to maintain the designated RPM, regardless of the environment and / or engine conditions. This also allows the ECU to respond dynamically to changes in engine load when the driver is not stepping on the accelerator, such as:
· Connection of the air conditioning compressor.
· Heating the vehicle when it is cold.
· When starting the vehicle. Many people do not know, but with a slow release of the clutch, the ECU will regulate the idle speed in such a way that the vehicle will start without problems.
· Turn the hydraulic steering.
The IAC actuator is an electrically controlled needle valve, governed by the vehicle's ECU. The valve is mounted in such a way that it does not pass through the butterfly valve of the TBI.
The actuator consists of a solenoid or an electric motor depending on the brand of the injection system, which controls a plunger / valve that variably restricts the flow of air through the body of the device. Therefore, the ECU can control the amount of air that passes to the engine when the throttle valve is fully closed, thus controlling the engine idle RPM.
In the previous figure there is a general diagram of what the idle control system is like.
The IAC valves of stepper motor are very precise and consume low power, but the great disadvantage is that the air flow passes through the stem and the spring creating turbulence, which causes all the dirt and the residual carbon of the combustion adhere to him; and with him
movement, all this dirt enters the moving mechanical part inside the valve motor, clogging it.
The dirt also increases if it gives unnecessary accelerations to the engine. This is because the rich mixture produces a lot of ollin, and the high vacuum that occurs in the intake manifold when you stop accelerating the engine sucks all this dirt into the valve.
Usually many people when the vehicle starts to fail at minimum or the engine gives jerks when you turn on the air conditioning or even when the scanner fails IAC completely replace the valve and often only by doing a maintenance of a few minutes solves the problem saving with this a lot of money.
